Hybrid optical elements that combine refractive and diffractive functionality are versatile components for all kinds of applications in imaging or metrology. In the past those elements were composed of a flat diffractive and a curved refractive surface. Fusing both functions in a single surface will enhance the capabilities of these optical components further. The fabrication of such precision ...

Design and quality evaluation of micro-optical freeform beam shapers

Progress in micro-fabrication has enabled not only diffractive optical elements (DOE) but also complex freeform surfaces [1]. Transmissive optical elements can be mainly classified into refractive and diffractive. Ray-tracing techniques are sufficient to explain light propagation through and beyond refractive elements. On the other hand, since interferences are the basis of the diffractive doma...

Engineering of micro- and nanostructured surfaces with anisotropic geometries and properties.

Widespread approaches to fabricate surfaces with robust micro- and nanostructured topographies have been stimulated by opportunities to enhance interface performance by combining physical and chemical effects. In particular, arrays of asymmetric surface features, such as arrays of grooves, inclined pillars, and helical protrusions, have been shown to impart unique anisotropy in properties inclu...

Wafer-Level Hybrid Integration of Complex Micro-Optical Modules

A series of technological steps concentrating around photolithography and UV polymer on glass replication in a mask-aligner that allow for the cost-effective generation of rather complex micro-optical systems on the wafer level are discussed. In this approach, optical functional surfaces are aligned to each other and stacked on top of each other at a desired axial distance. They can consist of ...

Integration of micro-optical elements with top-end of fibers via focused ion beam direct fabrication [5636-21]

Integration of micro-optical elements (MOEs) with optical fiber at top-end was realized by use of focused ion beam (FIB) direct milling. The designed MOEs (micro-refractive lens, microdiffractive lens with continuous relief, and micro-gratings) were directly milled by the FIB with ion energy and ion beam current of 40 keV and 569 pA, respectively, in the core area of both single mode fiber and ...
